Body Restoration Spa is not running any promotions. Beware of Body Restoration Imitators

November 20th, 2011

In June 2011, a male massage therapist sent me his resume looking for employment. I didn’t respond to him because we don’t have much demand for male massage therapists.

By August 2011, Body Restoration started to get calls from people looking to use their Eversave coupon. When we told them we were not running any deals with Eversave, they didn’t believe us. The exchange of words between the desk managers and the callers with these Eversave coupons was becoming testy.

I discovered that the male massage therapist who sent his resume back in June had opened a massage center on the same street just three blocks from our location with the exact use of the name “Body Restoration.” He had copied and tweaked a good chunk of Body Restoration’s web site content. He proceeded to sell a ton of Eversave coupons under the guise of our spa’s name.

I called him and informed him that the name “Body Restoration” has been trademarked since 2001. He agreed to change the name of his business and decided to go with something else. I thought, “ok, let’s see how this goes.” People are still confused by this and are purchasing his deals and calling us to secure their appointments.

Reading his bio on his web site is vastly different than the resume he sent me in June 2011. There is no indication that he has been in business since 2004 as a massage therapist.

In fact, there is a Yelp badge on his web site’s home page that says, “We have 37 five star reviews on Yelp.” Nothing could be further from the truth. Yelp lists about  five or so reviews on his place.

A loyal client of Body Restoration arrived for her appointment and told us she would like to use the Eversave coupon we are running. She took out her phone and showed me the panel where the promotion is listed. I had to reassure her three times that it was not our promotion. She seemed completely blind sided, disappointed and in disbelief.

When purchasing (from these deal sites) spa treatments at rock bottom prices, please remember:  if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

There is only one Body Restoration Spa in Philadelphia. Any like-sounding spa names in center city, Philadelphia are meant to confuse the public into purchasing deals.

Crank Calling Spas: Part I

September 30th, 2011

“What does the massage include?”

When a caller asks this, my instincts are usually correct. They are looking for an erotic massage and want to make sure that we provide that before they make their appointment. Without making any assumption, I go into the commercial and explain that we massage hands, feet, back, legs, arms, face and scalp. Then they probe deeper. “Y’all massage d****?” They cannot believe that for $80, a 1-hour massage will not include a happy ending. If I had trusted my instincts, I would have replied, “We offer non-sexual therapeutic massage” in the first place.

As a spa, we need to set boundaries. Screening callers and informing them they need to complete the medical form or Client Profile as we like to call it should give the caller a hint that this is not a place for adult entertainment.

“What kind of massage do you do?” Once again, I cut to the chase with my usual reply, “Non-sexual therapeutic massage for women and men.” The caller, who sounded like a middle-aged male, responds, “That’s exactly what I was looking for.” He quickly ends the call. His feathers are obviously ruffled by my response. If he were a regular massage goer, he would have asked for a 1-hour massage for specific reasons, i.e. relaxation, pain relief.

Body Restoration Spa is located on a third floor and clients are buzzed in. Spas are safer on a second or third floor without the riff raff that may wander up from the street. We make every effort to attract and maintain a clientele looking for a place to unwind and heal.

Understanding Spa Culture: Part 2

February 28th, 2011

How do you like your waxing? Are you the type that prefers it to be quick with larger fewer pulls so as to ‘get it over with’? Or, would you rather the esthetician wax smaller pieces at a time so it’s less painful but takes longer?1051 300x200 Understanding Spa Culture: Part 2

Some clients prefer the no nonsense form of waxing where the esthetician applies larger panels of hard wax and positions a fan over them so they will dry and set faster. It will be more painful if it is done this way but you will be finished much sooner and the result will be long lasting. Expect flinching until the wax service is finished.

However, a majority of our clients prefer the less painful route of applying smaller panels and peeling them up gently. We always use the fan to dry and set the panels of hard wax that are applied. But should you opt for this method, it’s important for the esthetician to keep your mind off of each pull. The results are excellent and it all depends on whether you are willing to wait until this slower more pleasant method is completed.

We are finding that the waxing client of today prefers steady conversation so as to distract her from the pull that is about to be made. It’s becoming a strategy at Body Restoration Spa to make the client feel that the waxing can happen while she is not thinking about it. The conversation made during the service is a part of the service itself. There are relationships between esthetician and client that span eight years at Body Restoration Spa and have become personal. Clients prefer to stay with the same esthetician because this is the technician who has seen their nether regions and has provided such personal services for them. They’d rather not see a different esthetician each time. Personal privacy is an issue when getting comfortable with the waxer.

We have two waxing rooms in the middle area of the spa. We have discontinued the use of the front waxing room just off from the reception area. Feedback indicated it wasn’t private enough for the client receiving a Brazilian wax so close to the activity in the reception area.

We stopped using the front wax room in September of 2010 and have not looked back. Plans are in the works to create an additional wax room within another area of the spa.

Feel free to let your esthetician know if you prefer the faster method or the slower method of waxing when it comes to bikini waxing. We use the Cadillac of all hard waxes for an area as tender as the bikini line so you know it will always be in your best interest no matter which method you decide.
